Greenpeace finds problematic chemicals in children's temporary tattoos

An investigation conducted by Greenpeace Austria and the Chamber of Labour Upper Austria has identified numerous problematic chemicals in children's temporary tattoos. The study involved testing 15 products in an independent laboratory.

While the tested samples did not exceed existing EU limit values, researchers detected a total of 31 concerning substances across the products. One single sample contained as many as twelve different problematic substances.

Key findings include the presence of lead or nickel in 14 of the 15 samples, though both remained below legal limits. Additionally, four samples contained PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), and six samples contained chemicals that are prohibited for use in cosmetics or children's toys due to their properties. Twelve samples also contained problematic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including solvents that can be absorbed through the skin and cause irritation or allergic reactions.
