Greenpeace Indonesia protests at GIIAS, urges EV makers to drop Raja Ampat nickel

On 30 July 2026, Greenpeace Indonesia staged a peaceful demonstration at the opening of the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) in BSD Tangerang, Banten. Activists unfurled banners reading “Protect Raja Ampat, Stop Dirty Energy” and “Is Your Car Powered by Forest Destruction?” while Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita pressed the launch button.

The group demanded that electric‑vehicle manufacturers disclose and sever any supply‑chain links to nickel mined in the biodiverse Raja Ampat archipelago. Greenpeace highlighted that, despite the revocation of four mining permits last year, PT Gag Nikel continues operating on Pulau Gag and that other companies are pursuing permits on nearby islands. The protest coincided with the release of Greenpeace’s report “Surga yang Tak Terlindungi,” which documents ongoing nickel extraction and its environmental impacts. The organization called for a “just transition” that protects forests and local communities while supporting Indonesia’s shift to clean energy.
