Greenpeace Netherlands advocates for organic farming to ensure food security

Greenpeace Netherlands has released a plea for organic and agroecological farming as a core component of future food systems. Campaigner Hilde Anna de Vries argues that the claim that organic farming cannot feed the world is a myth.

The organization suggests that agroecological farming can produce sufficient food if paired with shifts in consumption patterns, such as reduced meat and dairy consumption, decreased food waste, and fairer food distribution. Citing 2017 research, Greenpeace asserts that a fully organic food system could feed nine billion people without additional land use if these dietary and waste changes are implemented.

Furthermore, Greenpeace highlights that organic and agroecological methods reduce dependency on synthetic fertilizers and imported animal feed, while offering benefits for biodiversity, soil health, and climate resilience.

Regarding domestic policy, the organization criticized current Dutch agricultural trends. While the Netherlands aims for 15 percent of agricultural land to be organic by 2030, the current figure is approximately 5 percent. Greenpeace is calling for increased support for the transition, long-term certainty, and fair pricing for growers.
