Greenpeace report: One-third of ready-to-use doughs contain palm oil
Greenpeace has conducted a market analysis of 82 chilled ready-to-use dough products in Austrian supermarkets, evaluating them based on ecological criteria such as organic content, plant-based ingredients, and the origin of flour and oil.
The study found that approximately one-third of the examined doughs contain palm oil, which Greenpeace criticizes due to its link to deforestation and peatland destruction. While two-thirds of the products avoid palm oil by using sunflower or rapeseed oil, the origin of these oils is rarely Austrian; only 4% of the plant oils tested were sourced from Austria, while 64% came from other EU countries.
Furthermore, the report highlights a lack of organic options, noting that only 8% of the products are certified organic. The organization suggests that doughs using purely plant-based ingredients and organic certification offer the best ecological profile.
