Greenpeace warns of accelerating coastal erosion in Canary Islands and Portugal

Greenpeace released two reports warning that climate‑induced sea‑level rise is rapidly eroding Atlantic coastlines. In the Canary Islands, the organization says nearly four kilometres of natural shoreline disappear each year, threatening 150 km of coast and exposing 72 % of wastewater discharges. The report urges the regional government to adopt an emergency coastal‑protection plan, halt high‑impact developments and invest in wastewater treatment and ecosystem restoration.

In Portugal, Greenpeace estimates that 40 % of the country’s beaches could vanish by 2100, with some sections already retreating 10‑40 metres. More than 100 000 residents live in flood‑prone coastal zones. The Portuguese report calls for immediate political action to protect people, nature and public territory, citing unchecked urban expansion and tourism as aggravating factors.
