Greenpeace warns of ash and mud runoff from Burgohondo fires
Greenpeace has documented the movement of ash, mud, and sediment into rivers and reservoirs following autumn rains in areas affected by the Burgohondo fire in Ávila, Spain. This fire, one of the most severe of 2026, has resulted in 'black rivers' of sludge that threaten ecosystems, fishing activities, and water supplies.
The organization warns that the environmental emergency persists long after flames are extinguished. Without urgent measures to stabilize soil and protect forest surfaces, erosion and the runoff of burnt materials into water catchment areas pose significant risks to public health and environmental stability. Similar incidents have been noted in previous years in regions like Sanabria and Ponferrada, highlighting a recurring pattern of post-fire ecological crises.
