Greenville County Historical Society highlights local history and legacy

The Greenville County Historical Society is highlighting local history through its research and upcoming 2026-27 lecture series. One significant historical account details the work of Hattie Logan Duckett, who founded the Phillis Wheatley Association in 1919 to provide services for young Black women in a segregated Greenville. Following community fundraising efforts, the Phillis Wheatley Center opened in 1924, serving as a vital hub for education, recreation, and social services for the Black community.

The Society’s upcoming lecture series will feature various historians discussing topics such as the 200-year history of Furman University, the development of Greenville’s Black high schools, and the history of the Greenville Memorial Auditorium. These monthly events aim to preserve and share the diverse people and events that have shaped the Greenville community.
