Greeval greening the Gyoko-dori underground passage in Tokyo

Greeval Co., Ltd. has implemented a greening project in the Gyoko-dori underground passage, which connects Tokyo Station to the Imperial Palace. This initiative is part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s ‘Machinaka no Mori’ project, which aims to introduce nature into urban spaces like stations and underground walkways to create opportunities for citizens to connect with nature.

The project, themed ‘Strolling Underground,’ runs from September 15, 2026, to January 14, 2027. To ensure plant stability in the unique light environment of an underground passage, the company is utilizing specialized technologies, including ‘bio-Light+’ LED lighting designed for photosynthesis and circulators to manage humidity and simulate natural movement.

Beyond the visual transformation, the project serves as a research initiative to verify the effects and challenges of maintaining greenery in indoor and underground environments. Greeval also plans to host two workshops in late 2026 to repurpose parts of the installation, such as creating dried flower potpourri and pampas grass decorations, to promote a cycle of urban greenery from underground to the community.
