Greg Lopez Secures Ballot Spot as Independent in Colorado Governor Race

Greg Lopez qualified for the November ballot as an unaffiliated candidate in Colorado’s gubernatorial race after submitting the required 1,000 voter signatures in each of the state’s eight congressional districts. The former Republican, who previously served a brief term in Congress following Ken Buck’s resignation and was mayor of Parker, has run for governor three times, losing in the Republican primaries in 2018 and 2022.

Lopez announced Jefferson County resident Taralyn Romero as his running mate. Some Republicans are considering backing Lopez to avoid voting for the GOP nominee, Victor Marx, whose background includes service in the Marines and running an evangelical ministry. Lopez’s past includes a 1993 domestic‑violence incident, a DUI charge, and a 2020 settlement with federal prosecutors over alleged SBA loan‑guarantee interference.
