Greg Papa battles leukemia following radio layoff
Greg Papa, a prominent play-by-play announcer for the San Francisco 49ers, is currently battling leukemia. His diagnosis occurred last summer while he was on vacation in France.
Following a stem cell donation from his younger sister intended for a bone marrow transplant, Papa experienced serious complications, including pneumonia. This health struggle mirrors that of his brother, the late Philadelphia sportscaster Gary Papa, who died in 2009 after a five-year battle with prostate cancer.
In addition to his health challenges, Papa was recently laid off from his midday radio show, ‘Papa & Silver’, on San Francisco station KNBR. The layoffs come as owner Cumulus Media, which filed for bankruptcy protection in March, undergoes restructuring to address $697 million in debt.
