Gregg Araki critiques lack of sexuality in superhero films

Director Gregg Araki has commented on the perceived lack of sexuality in modern superhero films following an incident where his film, ‘I Want Your Sex’, was accidentally screened instead of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. Araki, a key figure in the New Queer Cinema movement, noted that while he has no issue with Marvel, he finds the asexual nature of many superhero entries odd.

In a separate analysis of film symbolism, the use of a ceiling vent as a visual motif for female dissociation has been identified in both the queer slasher ‘Camp Miasma’ and the MCU film ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. In ‘Camp Miasma’, the symbol is linked to the character Little Death, while in the Marvel film, it appears during a scene involving character dissociation.
