Greggs announces plans to close four factories and cut 740 jobs

Greggs has announced a major manufacturing overhaul that includes the proposed closure of four factories, potentially putting approximately 740 jobs at risk over the next two and a half years. The targeted sites for closure are located in Enfield, North Lakes (near Penrith), Kelso (Pettigrews), and Seaham.

While manufacturing at the Enfield site is slated to end, the company intends to continue its distribution operations from that location. Additionally, the Treforest site in Wales will transition from manufacturing to a distribution centre. The restructuring will also involve reducing product ranges at the Clydesmill and Manchester sites and ceasing tinned bread production at Gosforth.

The company expects the restructuring to cost roughly £60 million, covering redundancy payments and disruption costs, but anticipates annual savings of approximately £20 million during the 2028 and 2029 financial years. Chief Executive Roisin Currie stated the move is necessary to “keep evolving alongside changing customer expectations” and to ensure the business remains sustainable.

The announcement follows a period of strong performance, with Greggs reporting a 7.7% rise in sales for the three months ending September 26. Despite the proposed manufacturing cuts, the company noted that its retail shop estate will not be affected by these changes.
