Gregor Prosen resigns as head of Maribor Emergency Center

Dr. Gregor Prosen has resigned from his position as the head of the Emergency Center at the University Clinical Center (UKC) Maribor. In his resignation statement, Prosen cited numerous systemic issues, stating that the medical emergency system is “driving directly into a precipice.” He noted that he has spent years warning about critical problems within the Slovenian emergency medical services.

Prosen has been a vocal critic of the current state of healthcare, highlighting severe staffing shortages, a lack of hospital beds, and the overwhelming burden on emergency services. He previously described the situation as “catastrophic” and “completely chaotic,” specifically pointing to a decline in interest in emergency medicine specializations and the failure to implement long-awaited reforms.

UKC Maribor leadership confirmed the resignation and stated that Prosen will continue his duties during the notice period to ensure uninterrupted patient care. The institution will begin procedures to appoint a successor. Simultaneously, the Slovenian government has replaced all four state representatives on the UKC Maribor institute council.
