Gregory Bovino retired amid federal misconduct investigation

Former Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official Gregory Bovino retired in March while under internal investigation for misconduct related to immigration enforcement operations in Chicago and Minneapolis.

Newly released government records show that a federal watchdog contacted Bovino on March 2 regarding allegations of misconduct. Shortly after, on March 18, Bovino notified officials of his intent to retire. The investigation focused on findings by U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis, who stated that Bovino was evasive and had engaged in “outright lying” during a deposition concerning Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago.

Investigators also questioned Bovino regarding whether his lack of credibility would jeopardize future legal cases and whether he made disparaging remarks about Jewish people during a meeting with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minneapolis. Bovino has denied any wrongdoing, claiming the investigation was politically motivated and intended to force his retirement. The Department of Homeland Security stated that Bovino retired voluntarily and declined to comment further on personnel matters.
