Gregory Coleman faces calls to resign amid Liberia police procurement allegations
Liberia National Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman is facing calls to resign or step aside amid allegations of conflicts of interest. The controversy arises during an investigation into a $336 million narcotics scandal involving the alleged infiltration of security institutions by drug traffickers.
Critics allege that three black sport-utility vehicles, valued at over $150,000, were acquired for the police force through cash gifts rather than standard government procurement or budgetary processes. Questions have been raised regarding Jose Quintin Russell, an associate of Coleman, who reportedly purchased the vehicles in the United States before assuming fleet-management duties for the police while maintaining a private auto-servicing business used by the force.
Additional scrutiny has been placed on internal administrative decisions, including the promotion of officers previously disciplined in connection to the narcotics probe and the assignment of personnel during the seizure of a suspected $317 million drug shipment.
