Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has announced his opposition to a proposed $2.8 billion arms sale from the Trump administration to Israel. The munitions package includes approximately 40,000 highly destructive 2,000-pound bombs, specifically identified in some reports as 20,000 MK-84 bombs, 20,000 BLU-117 bombs, and 20,000 I-2000 penetrator warheads.

Meeks stated that while he remains committed to Israel’s security, the sale raises “grave, unresolved concerns” regarding how such heavy munitions might be used in densely populated areas of Gaza and Lebanon. He argued that the administration has not provided sufficient assurances that the weapons will be used in accordance with U.S. and international law, particularly concerning civilian protection.

Although Meeks can place an informal hold on the transaction through his committee role, his objection alone may not be sufficient to block the sale. The President maintains the authority to bypass Congressional review by declaring a national emergency, a tactic previously used by the administration to expedite military transfers to Israel.
