Greifswald archaeologists discover medieval brick kiln
Archaeologists in Greifswald have uncovered a large medieval brick kiln during road construction work on the street ‘An den Wurthen’. The discovery, which could be up to 800 years old, may have provided building materials for the city’s famous Marienkirche and other historic buildings in the old town.
Initial investigations suggest the facility dates back to the 13th or 14th century and may have been in continuous use until the 18th century. Excavation leader Janin Zorn from AIM-V Archäologie reported that at least six different firing floors have been identified, indicating the site was repeatedly repaired and updated over several centuries.
The find is expected to significantly delay the ongoing road construction project, which is now projected to be completed in 2027.
