Grenada prepares for November 5 general election
Grenada is preparing for general elections scheduled for November 5, as candidates across the territory begin their campaigns. Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has been officially designated as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for St. David. Mitchell expressed commitment to his manifesto, focusing on healthcare, sports facilities, infrastructure, and transport, while promising regular community engagement to ensure accountability.
The main opposition, the New National Party (NNP) led by Emmalin Pierre, seeks to challenge the NDC, which won nine of the 15 House of Representatives seats in the 2022 elections.
Concurrently, former attorney general Cajeton Hood has expressed concern regarding the timing of the election. Hood filed a High Court claim to settle controversies regarding voter registration, specifically the electoral rights of Grenadians living overseas. He noted that the first hearing is set for October 29, expressing disappointment that there may not be sufficient time for a judicial determination before the polls open on November 5.
