Greta bus crash families seek access to investigation files

Lawyers representing the families and survivors of the Greta bus crash are seeking access to thousands of pages of documents used in a major Office of Transport Safety Investigations (OTSI) report. The request was made during a directions hearing in the NSW Supreme Court.

The crash occurred on June 11, 2023, when a coach traveling from a Hunter Valley venue toward Singleton lost control at a roundabout, resulting in ten deaths and 25 injuries. Bus driver Brett Button was sentenced in 2024 to a maximum of 32 years in prison, with a non-parole period of 24 years, after investigations found he had taken prescription painkillers and was driving too quickly.

The OTSI report highlighted that previous complaints against Button had not been disclosed when he changed employers. It also noted that New South Wales lacked an industry-wide driver management system to track performance metrics, such as passenger feedback or breaches, at the time of the accident. A liability hearing for the ongoing class action is expected in late 2027 at the earliest.
