Greta Thunberg calls for global attention to Kalimantan forest fires
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has called for international attention regarding the ongoing forest and land fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Through social media, Thunberg shared footage from Palangkaraya showing an orange-tinted sky caused by dense haze. She emphasized that the situation on the ground is significantly more severe than what is being portrayed on social media.
Thunberg highlighted the devastating environmental and human costs, claiming that approximately two million hectares of forest have been destroyed. The fires have reportedly resulted in wildlife being burned alive, villagers losing rubber plantations and forests, and fatalities among firefighters. The haze poses a severe health risk, particularly to vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly.
In her posts, Thunberg also shared footage from Dayak indigenous activist Emmanuela Shinta to illustrate the deteriorating air quality. The activist is encouraging global awareness and directing attention toward fundraising efforts intended to support firefighters, provide protective equipment for residents, and assist in forest conservation efforts.
