Gretchen Whitmer asserts US readiness to elect a female president

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has challenged previous assertions that American voters are not prepared to elect a female president. Speaking on NBC News’ ‘Meet the Press’, Whitmer countered comments made by former First Lady Michelle Obama in 2025, who suggested the electorate was not ready for a woman in the presidency.

Whitmer expressed confidence in Democratic governors competing against potential Republican nominees JD Vance or Marco Rubio in 2028. When asked if a woman could be the best choice to defeat a GOP nominee in that cycle, she responded, “I do.”

Regarding her own political future, Whitmer did not rule out a run for the presidency in 2028. She stated that she intends to take time off to determine her next steps after her term as governor concludes in January.
