Gretchen Whitmer defends LGBTQ+ rights and political record

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has reaffirmed her commitment to LGBTQ+ rights, stating that the community is currently “a target” and pledging to fight against hate. Speaking ahead of her keynote address at the Human Rights Campaign’s National Dinner, Whitmer addressed internal Democratic debates regarding the political risks of defending transgender rights.

Whitmer emphasized that her support for these issues has not impacted her political success in Michigan, describing the state as a “very swing state” where she has remained steadfast. She characterized the issue as one of “fundamental freedoms” and “dignity for people, no matter who you love or how you identify.”

Her comments come as some political consultants and centrist groups have advised candidates to moderate their language or distance themselves from certain LGBTQ+ terminology to avoid political costs. Whitmer criticized those who target the community for political gain, suggesting such actors are “willing to hurt a community to score political points.”
