Gretna Green restores blacksmithing trade after 150 years

Blacksmithing has returned to the Scottish village of Gretna Green for the first time in over 150 years with the opening of a new forge. Located in Dumfries and Galloway, the Famous Blacksmiths Experience aims to restore a trade that is central to the village's historical identity.

Visitors can observe qualified blacksmiths at work, press souvenir coins, or participate in practical experiences. Advanced courses are also available, allowing individuals to forge items such as pokers or personalized keepsakes.

Historically, Gretna Green became a renowned destination for eloping couples following the 1754 Marriage Act, which required parental consent for those under 21 in England. In Scotland, individuals over 16 could marry by declaring their intentions before witnesses, a tradition closely tied to the village's heritage.
