Grey divorce rates rise among older adults
The phenomenon of ‘grey divorce’—separations occurring in individuals aged 50 and older—is a growing social reality. In the United States, the divorce rate for people in this age bracket doubled between 1990 and 2010. Currently, nearly 40% of divorces in the country involve individuals in this age range.
Experts note that while rates for adults aged 50 to 64 have stabilized, the trend continues to rise among older populations. This shift often occurs after decades of shared life, such as raising children and establishing homes, only for couples to find they have become strangers once the household becomes quiet.
