Grey’s Anatomy universe to expand with Texas-based spin-off

The Grey’s Anatomy television universe is expanding with a new spin-off set in the rural medical deserts of West Texas. Executive producer Meg Marinis and original creator Shonda Rhimes are developing the project with support from ABC.

Unlike the original series set in Seattle, this new production will focus on the extreme challenges faced by communities located hundreds of kilometers away from fully equipped hospitals. The series aims to explore healthcare inequalities and the realities of regions with limited access to medical professionals and treatments. Marinis noted that the production is researching real stories from rural West Texas to depict experiences rarely seen on television.

While the plot centers on a medical team serving as a final line of defense in sparsely populated areas, the show will maintain connections to the original series through special appearances by established characters.
