GRIDCo announces nationwide demolition of structures near power lines

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced a nationwide demolition exercise to remove structures and encroachments located within restricted areas along high-voltage transmission lines. The company clarified that the initiative is a corporate mandate to protect transmission infrastructure and ensure public safety, rather than a government-directed action.

GRIDCo officials noted that illegal human activities and encroachments pose significant risks to both human life and the stability of the national electricity supply. A recent incident in Ashaiman, where a tanker being welded damaged a transmission tower, resulted in a prolonged power outage.

While GRIDCo is intensifying public education campaigns to warn residents about the dangers of living or trading near power corridors, some affected residents have expressed concern. Those facing demolition have argued that the 30-day notice period provided is insufficient to make alternative living or business arrangements.
