GRIDCo announces 15-hour power outage in Greater Accra

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced a 15-hour planned power interruption across parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, August 23. The outage is scheduled from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate the second phase of emergency repairs on a damaged transmission tower in Ashaiman.

The tower, part of the 161kV Tema-Achimota transmission line, sustained critical structural damage following a fuel tanker explosion in July. This maintenance phase is necessary to fully replace the damaged structure and ensure the stability of the regional power network.

Working with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), GRIDCo has identified several affected areas within the Accra West and Accra East operational zones. Impacted locations include James Town, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Tesano, Madina, Cantonment, and Osu, among others. The shutdown is intended to provide a safe environment for technical teams to complete the replacement work.
