GRIDCo issues 30-day deadline to clear Ghana power line corridors

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has issued a nationwide 30-day ultimatum for the removal of all unauthorized structures located within high-voltage power line corridors. This directive applies to any kiosks, sheds, fences, or other human settlements occupying transmission rights-of-way across the country.

Bismark Anane, GRIDCo’s Director of Land Management, stated that the enforcement aims to mitigate severe safety risks, including electrocution and fire outbreaks, while ensuring maintenance crews can access infrastructure. Encroachment has been linked to grid instability; for instance, a welding explosion in Ashaiman in August 2026 caused a transmission line outage.

Sensitization and eviction exercises have already commenced in the Ashanti Region, specifically in areas like Ejisu. The move follows a directive from the Minister for Energy after a fuel tanker explosion in Ashaiman damaged a transmission tower. GRIDCo warned that failure to vacate voluntarily within the month will result in forced demolitions to protect the integrity of the national power grid.
