GRIDCo Mallam substation fire disrupts power in Accra

A fire at the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) Mallam substation has caused electricity disruptions in several parts of Accra, including Lapaz, Mallam, and Awoshie. The blaze destroyed critical components, specifically control boards and transformers used to regulate electricity flow.

Firefighters from the Adjen Kotoku and Amasaman stations responded to the scene and managed to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to other essential equipment within the facility. While the containment efforts limited the scope of the damage, the destruction of key hardware has left residents and businesses without a confirmed timeline for power restoration.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and technical teams are expected to conduct assessments to determine the full extent of the damage and the necessary repairs. GRIDCo, which operates the national electricity transmission network, has not yet provided an estimate for when normal operations will resume.
