GRIDCo sets September 2026 deadline to clear power-line corridors

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has issued a firm deadline of September 12, 2026, for all unauthorized occupants to vacate high-voltage transmission line Right-of-Way (RoW) corridors nationwide.

Following the deadline, GRIDCo intends to collaborate with law enforcement and statutory institutions to physically remove or demolish unauthorized structures, including homes, businesses, shops, and garages. The company stated that such encroachments threaten public safety and undermine the reliability of the national power transmission system. Prohibited activities within these corridors include construction, excavation, drilling, and commercial operations, as regulated by the Transmission Line Protection Regulations.

The ultimatum follows recent infrastructure challenges, including a damaged transmission tower on the Tema-Achimota line that caused significant power outages in the Greater Accra Region. GRIDCo noted that unauthorized activities and accidents, such as a tanker crashing into a tower, highlight the dangers posed by corridor encroachment. While electricity has been restored to affected areas following recent repairs, the company emphasized the need to protect the grid's integrity.
