Griffon vulture delays flight at Heraklion Airport in Crete

A griffon vulture caused a flight delay at Heraklion Airport on the Greek island of Crete after landing on the wing of a plane prepared for takeoff. The pilot discovered the bird and alerted the control tower, prompting an emergency response.

Airport firefighters used a ladder to reach the animal. Despite the pilot moving the aircraft's control surfaces to encourage the bird to leave, the vulture remained unmoved. Firefighters eventually captured the bird using gloves and a jacket. The animal was described by firefighter Antonis Petrakis as being ‘completely calm’ during the unprecedented incident.

The vulture has been handed over to specialists for examination. Crete is considered a stronghold for the species, with research from the University of Crete suggesting there are approximately 140 breeding pairs on the island.
