Griffon vulture spotted over Silesia in Poland

A griffon vulture has been spotted over Knurow in the Silesia region of Poland. While the species does not nest in Poland, its appearance is considered a significant event for local birdwatchers due to the bird's massive size, which exceeds that of eagles and white-tailed eagles.

According to Birding Poland, there have been approximately 50 recorded instances of griffon vultures appearing in the country. The increasing frequency of these sightings is attributed to successful reintroduction programs for the species in Southern Europe. Although historical accounts once suggested vultures might have nested in the Tatra or Pieniny mountains, they are not considered a permanent part of the local nesting fauna.
