Grifols pivots to Egypt to address debt and market scrutiny

Grifols is attempting to stabilize its business through a pioneering plasma collection and treatment system in Egypt, aiming to move past years of financial and reputational challenges. The company's difficulties intensified in early 2024 following a report by the US-based short-selling firm Gotham, which accused the pharmaceutical company of inflating operating profits and underreporting its true debt levels.

Despite recent restructuring and changes in governance, the market remains concerned about Grifols' high debt load. In 2023, the company's debt exceeded 9.4 billion euros, representing more than six times its EBITDA. While debt has since decreased, it remains above 7.5 billion euros, which is more than four times its EBITDA, continuing to impact the company's market recovery.
