Grifols resumes plasma collection in Winnipeg and Edmonton

Grifols has begun a phased reopening of its plasma collection centres in Winnipeg and Edmonton following a two-month shutdown of its 17 Canadian locations. The company resumed operations at its Innovation Drive site in Winnipeg and a Windermere location in Edmonton on Tuesday, initially offering fewer appointments than usual.

The shutdown occurred in mid-August following the deaths of two donors at Grifols facilities in Winnipeg: one at the Taylor Avenue location in October 2025 and another at the Innovation Drive site in January 2026. While Health Canada stated it found no direct link between the deaths and the plasma collection process, the agency suspended the licence for the Taylor Avenue location due to compliance issues regarding quality management systems.

Grifols, a Spain-based company, stated it has improved employee training, supervision, and internal processes. The reopening plan was developed in coordination with Health Canada and Canadian Blood Services.
