Grinding Gear Games planted fake assets to mislead Path of Exile dataminers
Chris Wilson, co-founder of Grinding Gear Games, revealed that the developers of Path of Exile used to intentionally plant fake assets within game files to mislead dataminers.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Wilson explained that the studio created decoy content to send fans on false trails when patches were being analyzed by the community. While he described the practice as a way of trolling, he admitted it was not an efficient defense and resulted in wasted development hours that could have been spent on actual game content.
In addition to these decoys, the studio employed other methods to combat datamining, such as scrubbing non-essential data from patch files and using encryption, though Wilson noted that encryption only provides temporary protection before files are decrypted for players.
