Grindr to pay £26 million to settle UK privacy lawsuit
Grindr has agreed to a £26 million settlement to resolve a UK class action lawsuit involving the alleged unauthorized sharing of sensitive user data with third-party advertisers. The legal action, led by the law firm Austen Hays, represents approximately 12,000 users and concerns data practices occurring prior to early 2020.
The claimants allege that the dating app breached privacy laws by sharing highly sensitive information, including users' HIV status, HIV test dates, sexual orientation, and use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), without proper consent. The data was reportedly shared with advertising and analytics firms such as Localytics and Apptimize.
Grindr stated in a US regulatory filing that the settlement does not constitute an admission of liability or a finding of wrongdoing. The company noted that the disputed practices occurred while the platform was under the ownership and control of the Chinese conglomerate Beijing Kunlun Tech. Grindr has since undergone management changes and ownership transitions, including a sale to San Vicente Acquisition in 2020.
The settlement will be paid in two installments of £13 million, with the first due by December 31, 2026, and the second by March 31, 2027. If distributed equally, claimants could receive an average of approximately £2,167, though final amounts will depend on legal and insurance costs.
