Griselda Gambaro, influential Argentine playwright, dies at 98
Argentine playwright and novelist Griselda Gambaro has passed away at the age of 98. A central figure in contemporary Argentine theater, Gambaro was recognized by the Secretariat of Culture of Argentina as a key and renewing force in the nation's dramatic arts.
Her career, which began in the 1960s, was characterized by a departure from dominant realism in favor of the absurd, the grotesque, and neovanguardist aesthetics. Her work frequently explored themes of power, institutional violence, the relationship between victim and victimizer, and social and political tensions. Notable works include ‘El desatino’, ‘Las paredes’, ‘La mala sangre’, and ‘Antígona furiosa’.
Gambaro's life was deeply impacted by Argentina's military dictatorship. She faced censorship, including the banning of her novel ‘Ganarse la muerte’, and was forced into exile in Barcelona. Upon her return to Argentina in the 1980s, she became a prominent participant in the ‘Teatro Abierto’ movement, a cultural resistance initiative against the regime. She passed away approximately two months after her husband, the sculptor Juan Carlos Distéfano.
