Switzerland carriage accident in Val Roseg kills one and injures twelve

A fatal horse-drawn carriage accident occurred on Saturday, August 15, 2026, in Val Roseg, located in the Engadin region of the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The incident involved a group of approximately 40 tourists traveling in two horse-drawn convoys near Pontresina.

According to the Graubünden Cantonal Police, the accident happened on a descent when the driver noticed insufficient braking power. In an attempt to steer the carriage—which consisted of a lead vehicle and two trailers—toward a flatter area to slow down, one of the horses fell. This caused the driver to lose control, leading the carriage to collide violently with a tree. Several passengers were thrown from the vehicle upon impact.

A 73-year-old woman died at the scene. Twelve other passengers were injured, including two who are reported to be in serious condition. Emergency responders utilized three helicopters and four ambulances to transport the injured to local hospitals. Authorities and the public prosecutor's office have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the crash. Following the event, carriage tours in Pontresina were suspended for at least one day.
