Brazil social movements hold 32nd Grito dos Excluídos protests

Social movements and organizations across Brazil held the 32nd edition of the ‘Grito dos Excluídos’ (Cry of the Excluded) on September 7, coinciding with the country's Independence Day. Demonstrations took place in more than 50 cities, including major hubs like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Fortaleza, and Boa Vista.

Under the theme ‘Life First’ and the slogan ‘In defense of the Earth, Peace, and Housing, we raise our voice: Living Women and Sovereignty!’, protesters demanded various social reforms. Key demands included dignified housing, agrarian reform, quality public education, the strengthening of the Unified Health System (SUS), and the abolition of the 6x1 work week. Participants also called for measures to combat feminicide, racism, LGBTphobia, and police violence.

In São Paulo, marches concluded with a mass at the Sé Cathedral dedicated to the homeless population. In Rio de Janeiro, activists highlighted social inequality and national sovereignty. In Rio Grande da Serra, demonstrators specifically addressed environmental and social concerns regarding the Billings Reservoir water transposition project. The movement, historically linked to the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), aims to provide visibility to marginalized communities and advocate for democratic stability and social justice.
