Grêmio defeats Atlético-MG 2-0 in Copa do Brasil semifinal first leg
Grêmio secured a significant advantage in the first leg of the 2026 Copa do Brasil semifinals, defeating Atlético-MG 2-0 at the Arena do Grêmio in Porto Alegre. Goals were scored by Carlos Vinícius in the 10th minute and Erick Noriega shortly after the start of the second half.
Carlos Vinícius opened the scoring following a long throw from goalkeeper Weverton. Noriega doubled the lead after a play involving João Pedro and Enamorado. Despite Atlético-MG maintaining higher possession and applying pressure, they struggled with clinical finishing. The match ended with Grêmio's Gustavo Martins being sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
With this result, Grêmio can lose by up to one goal in the second leg to advance to the final. Atlético-MG must win by three or more goals at the Arena MRV in Belo Horizonte on Saturday, November 7, to qualify directly, while a two-goal victory would lead to a penalty shootout. The defeat marks a difficult period for Atlético-MG, who have suffered four consecutive losses under coach Eduardo Domínguez.
