Grêmio faces registration restrictions under financial fair play rules
Grêmio has become the first Brazilian football club to face registration restrictions due to financial fair play regulations. The Agência Nacional de Regulação e Sustentabilidade do Futebol (ANRESF) has mandated that the club can only register new players with agency approval while its debt repayment plan is under review.
The restrictions stem from a collective payment plan totaling approximately R$ 16 million submitted to the Câmara Nacional de Resolução de Disputas (CNRD) to settle 23 active collection processes. To approve new signings, the club must demonstrate financial health by ensuring that total spending on new acquisitions does not exceed revenue from player sales and that the monthly payroll for athletes and technical staff does not exceed the average of the previous six months.
Grêmio management maintains that they are not in violation of fair play rules but are following the necessary procedures to resolve debts. The club stated it does not intend to make new signings during the current window and therefore expects no practical impact. The restrictions are expected to remain in place for up to 90 days while the repayment plan is analyzed.
