Grêmio implements coaching change and structural shifts
Grêmio is undergoing a period of transition following the appointment of Renato Portaluppi as head coach, replacing Luís Castro. Club president Odorico Roman stated that the decision to change leadership was driven by the delay in achieving consistent results rather than a single match. Roman also contested reports regarding a R$ 30 million severance fee for Castro, noting that the contract contains a confidentiality clause and that the reported figure is inaccurate.
Under Portaluppi’s new leadership, the club intends to overhaul various departments, including physical preparation and training models. Following a 0-0 draw against Palmeiras, where goalkeeper Weverton made eight high-difficulty saves to secure a point, the team sits in 17th place in the Brasileirão.
Portaluppi has expressed confidence in avoiding relegation, suggesting that approximately 12 victories could be sufficient to secure safety. The team faces a challenging schedule, including an upcoming match against Remo and the highly anticipated Gre-Nal derby against Internacional on October 11. However, the club faces disciplinary concerns as goalkeeper Weverton is currently among several players at risk of suspension due to accumulated yellow cards.
