Grünau-Nord youths unveil ‘Sketching our Future’ mural

Youths from Grünau-Nord have unveiled a new mural titled ‘Sketching our Future,’ which represents their collective vision for their district. The artwork utilizes a visual style inspired by the video game Minecraft to bridge generational gaps and symbolize the collaborative process of building a community.

The mural incorporates themes ranging from humor to serious social issues, including desires for peaceful coexistence, social justice, and the importance of green spaces and free leisure activities. It was developed through a series of workshops led by artists Kadir ‘Amigo’ Memis, Senja K. Brütting, Bárbara Niño, and Ehab Assadi, where participants engaged in dancing, painting, and calligraphy.

Co-curator Sithara Weeratunga noted that the project serves as a way to anchor youth perspectives and participation within the urban landscape. The initiative was created as part of the 50th anniversary of Grünau and was commissioned by the Leipzig Cultural Office under the ‘Stadtkuratorin Leipzig’ public art program.
