Grândola Forms Commission to Mark José Afonso Centenary

The municipality of Grândola announced a 15‑member commission to organise celebrations for the 100th anniversary of singer‑songwriter José Afonso. The panel, chaired by fellow musician Francisco Fanhais, includes local artists, historians, researchers and representatives of cultural associations such as the José Afonso Association and the 25 April Association.

Mayor Luís Vital Alexandre said the commission will shape the programme from 17 May 2028, when Afonso first visited the town, through 2 August 2029, the date of his birth. Planned activities include concerts, exhibitions, a film project and other events, with the official launch held beside Vhils’ public artwork “Os Bravos”. The budget is still being defined, and the council intends to seek high patronage from the Presidency of the Republic and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
