Grünten Mountain Hiking Routes Detailed Guide

Grünten, a 1,738‑metre peak on the northern edge of the Allgäu Alps, is known as the “Wächter des Allgäus” and is the first mountain visible when entering the Allgäu from the north. Three main routes lead to its summit. The classic ascent starts at the Alpe Weiherle parking area in Burgberg, follows well‑maintained forest paths and serpentine climbs to the historic Grüntenhaus (temporarily closed in August 2026 but overnight stays are possible by arrangement). From the hut the trail continues past the Bayerischer Rundfunk transmission tower to the Jägerdenkmal on the summit, then returns via the same way to the tower before descending the ridge to Alpe Obere Schwande, alpine meadows and past the Gasthof Alpenblick back to the start. The round‑trip is about 8.8 km, takes roughly 4.5 hours, involves 820 m of elevation gain and is rated medium difficulty. A shorter, easier hike begins at Alpe Kammeregg, while a more varied route combines the Burgberger Hörnle and the Starzlachklamm before reaching the peak.
