Grocery prices rise for staples like beef and coffee amid supply shortages
Various grocery staples are experiencing significant price increases due to environmental, biological, and economic factors. Key items seeing sharp rises include eggs, driven by bird flu outbreaks and high feed costs, and olive oil, impacted by droughts in Spain and the Mediterranean. Beef prices remain elevated as droughts and high feed costs have led to the smallest cattle supply in decades, affecting both ground beef and premium steak cuts.
Global supply chains are also being strained by climate issues. Coffee prices have risen due to poor harvests in Brazil and Vietnam, while cocoa prices have reached record levels following bad weather and plant diseases in West Africa.
In contrast to these rising costs, some retail items have maintained price stability. Costco’s Kirkland Signature bourbon line, supplied by Kentucky-based 1792 Distillery, has kept consistent pricing for its Small Batch, Bottled in Bond, and Single Barrel varieties since 2021, though availability remains limited.
