Grocery spending strategies offer significant savings for Italian households
Recent data highlights the challenges of managing grocery expenses amid rising food costs. In 2024, food and non-alcoholic beverage prices in Italy increased by 2.5%, leading 31.1% of families to report limiting the quantity or quality of their food purchases, according to Istat.
An analysis by Altroconsumo, covering 1,100 stores across 67 Italian cities, suggests that strategic shopping can lead to significant annual savings. For a family of four, choosing the right retailers and products could potentially save up to 3,790 euros on an estimated annual spend of 9,450 euros. Couples could save up to 3,355 euros, while individuals living alone could see savings of up to 2,305 euros.
Experts advise that for single occupants, the lowest price per kilo is not always the most economical if it leads to food waste. Bulk purchases and multi-pack promotions may be cost-effective for non-perishables but can increase waste for fresh goods. Effective budgeting requires balancing unit prices with actual consumption to avoid losing savings to discarded items.
