Grok AI generates controversial ranking of historical figures by death toll
The Grok chatbot, developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, has drawn significant attention on social media after providing a ranking of historical figures responsible for the highest number of deaths. In its top three list, Grok identified Mao Zedong (40 to 70 million deaths), Genghis Khan (20 to 40 million), and Joseph Stalin (15 to 20 million) as the deadliest figures. The chatbot noted that Adolf Hitler ranked closely behind with 11 to 17 million deliberate noncombatant deaths.
Discrepancies in AI responses highlight the difficulty of quantifying historical mortality. While Grok’s top three excluded Hitler, ChatGPT provided a different framing, emphasizing the Nazi regime's responsibility for approximately 6 million Jewish people and a total of 11 to 17 million victims of mass atrocities and forced labor.
Other AI-generated lists have produced even more varied results, sometimes inflating death tolls or shifting rankings significantly depending on whether they count direct killings, deaths caused by famine and policy, or total casualties of wars associated with a specific leader. The variation underscores how different methodologies and definitions of responsibility can drastically alter historical data presented by artificial intelligence.
