Grolsch brewery incident leaves eleven people hospitalized
Eleven people, including nine visitors and two tour guides, were hospitalized after consuming spring water during a tour at the Grolsch brewery in Enschede. The victims reported a strange, sour taste followed by a burning sensation in their stomachs.
Authorities suspect the water may have been contaminated with sodium hydroxide, a caustic substance used in industrial processes. This contamination could cause severe internal injuries, such as burns to the esophagus, throat, and stomach.
Grolsch representatives expressed shock regarding the incident, stating that it is currently unclear how the contamination occurred. The company noted that its products are not otherwise contaminated and production can continue. Police have launched a criminal investigation, and the Dutch Labor Inspectorate is also conducting an inquiry into the matter.
