Groningen bicycle tunnel under main station delayed until 2031

The bicycle tunnel passing under the main station in Groningen is not expected to be completed until 2031 at the earliest. While most of the tunnel and the underground bicycle parking facility are already in place, a final 30-meter section directly beneath the monumental station building remains unbuilt.

Delays were caused by concerns regarding potential damage to the historic station's foundation. Negotiations between the province, the municipality, ProRail, NS, and the construction firm Strukton stalled for months over liability for such damage. The municipality of Groningen has now decided to assume the risk itself.

The project faces increased costs of over three million euros due to the complexity of building under a national monument and necessary soil investigations. Although the tunnel passage is delayed, the underground bicycle parking is expected to open in the summer of 2028.
